How this paper will be taught
This paper addresses sociological and policy dimension to health and well-being. This course will introduce students to critical evidence based approaches to social policy - concerning health and well-being - both in New Zealand and globally.
Paper Structure
The course will be taught through Zoom lectures with a strong emphasis placed on student participation through online discussion forums. NET students can engage with the Tauranga class via Zoom on Fridays from 9am-11am.
To maximise your learning make sure you read the required readings each week. These are drawn upon for the online forum tutorials.
Tutor and Tutorials:
For NET students there is no in-class tutorial. Instead, students should read the week's agreed text thoroughly, write a 500-700 word commentary and create 2-4 discussion questions on that text. You may choose to focus on a specific issue raised by that text rather than try to summarise the whole text. You need to submit your commentary, and your 2-4 discussion questions to put to the others, into the forum by 5pm Wednesday. The tutor will reply to your submission Wednesday evening and students then need to respond to the tutor and engage with at least three other students in the forum by 5pm Friday to fulfil the participation part of the assessment. Successfully completing the weekly tutorial tasks accounts for 40% of the course mark.
Feel free to share your personal views and opinions too, but be respectful and thoughtful on the forums. When engaging with someone you disagree with, simply share your alternative opinion without negating or attacking their position. The idea is to simply share and express interest in each other's views rather than engage in a knock-out contest in which one person is 'right' and another 'wrong'.
Students are also required to check Moodle at least weekly for updates and for online learning materials.
